The box-office voyage continues: Universal’s historical epic The Odyssey has sailed past $1.767 billion at the global box office, cementing its place among the highest-grossing films of all time.

According to reports, the worldwide total comprises roughly $620.5 million from domestic cinemas and $1.147 billion from international markets — a split that underlines the film’s extraordinary pulling power far beyond North America.

The milestone caps a remarkable theatrical run. The film has already become Universal’s highest-grossing release ever, overtaking a record that had stood for more than a decade, and has set a string of other benchmarks along the way — including records for its director and for the large-format presentations that have defined the release.

The epic, which follows the ancient Greek hero’s long and perilous journey home after the Trojan War, has resonated with audiences of every age. Its success is a reminder that spectacle married to a timeless story remains one of cinema’s most powerful formulas, whatever the decade.

Demand shows no sign of abating. Select Imax and 70mm screenings returned to cinemas this month, giving audiences another chance to see the epic as its director intended — on the biggest, brightest screens available.

For the industry, the lesson of The Odyssey is already being debated: in an era of franchises and sequels, an original large-scale epic can still move the world to the multiplex. Whether any upcoming release can match the voyage remains to be seen, but the film’s place in box-office history is now beyond dispute.
