Boston’s Fenway Park delivers the best in-game entertainment in American sports, according to a new fan-experience scorecard built from more than 6,000 venue reviews.

The honor is a small marvel of adaptation. Fenway, opened in 1912, was designed for an era when entertainment meant the game itself; its modern presentation — music, video and crowd rituals woven around the Green Monster’s sightlines — now outscores venues built for spectacle, according to the analysis.

The overall ranking placed Pittsburgh’s PNC Park first, followed by Lambeau Field, Wrigley Field and then Fenway, with the Boston park’s category win anchoring its fourth-place finish.

Review-based rankings reward consistency: the between-innings experience is where ballparks reveal their craft, and fans cited Fenway’s atmosphere as the product of staff and ritual as much as technology.

For an industry building ever-larger screens, the result carries a hint. Entertainment, fans keep reporting, is not the size of the display. It is whether the place feels alive between pitches.

Fenway’s entertainment crown is, at bottom, a staffing achievement wearing a technology story’s clothes. A 114-year-old park cannot out-screen the leagues’ new arenas; what it can do — and what the reviews reward — is choreograph the oldest elements: the organ, the Monster, a crowd that knows when to stand without being told. The between-innings craft the scorecard measured is mostly people, trained in a building that teaches them.

There is a warning inside the compliment for the venue architects now drawing the next generation of parks. Fans have begun grading the spaces between the action as the product itself. Buildings designed backwards from the highlight will keep losing this category to a park designed, by happy accident of history, around the pause.

The study cannot measure the most Fenway quality of all: that a disappointing team in a beloved building produces a different review than a winning team in a soulless one. The analysis graded the building through good seasons and bad, and the atmosphere scores held — which may be the deepest definition of in-game entertainment available: it works when the product does not.
